Map tile API prices compared

What a vector map costs a month at Mapbox, MapTiler, Stadia Maps and overpass.ch, for 100,000, 2 million and 10 million tiles, and what the free services OpenFreeMap and VersaTiles offer.

As of 25 October 2026. We read every price on the pricing page of the provider on that day; the links are under Sources. Prices change, so check them there before you decide. We run overpass.ch, one of the services in the tables.

Billed per tile

One vector tile counts as one unit at all four: a tile request at Mapbox, a request at MapTiler, a credit at Stadia Maps and a map tile at overpass.ch. At MapTiler and overpass.ch, style files and fonts are free.

How the amounts add up

  • Mapbox Vector Tiles API: 200,000 tiles a month free, then USD 0.25 per 1,000 up to 2 million, USD 0.20 per 1,000 up to 4 million and USD 0.15 per 1,000 up to 20 million; above that, by contract. 2 million tiles: 1.8 million × USD 0.25 per 1,000 = USD 450. 10 million: USD 450 + USD 400 + USD 900.
  • MapTiler Flex: USD 30 a month with 500,000 requests, then USD 0.15 per 1,000. 2 million: USD 30 + 1.5 million × USD 0.15 per 1,000. The free plan has 100,000 requests and is for testing, prototypes and personal or non-commercial use; at its limit the service pauses until the next month. Above Flex, MapTiler offers custom contracts without public prices.
  • Stadia Maps: Starter USD 20 with 1 million credits, then USD 0.03 per 1,000; Standard USD 80 with 7.5 million, then USD 0.02 per 1,000; Professional USD 250 with 25 million, then USD 0.015 per 1,000. One vector or raster tile is one credit, a satellite tile four. 10 million tiles cost USD 290 on Starter and USD 130 on Standard. The free plan has 200,000 credits and does not allow commercial use.
  • overpass.ch: every account includes 100'000 map tiles a month, commercial use allowed. Maps Small has 2 million for CHF 9, Maps Medium 10 million for CHF 29 and Maps Large 40 million for CHF 79; a year costs ten months. There is no overage: at the limit, tiles get HTTP 429 until the next month or an upgrade.

Billed per map load

Two providers also bill per map instead of per tile. Mapbox GL JS counts a map load each time the library starts a map on a page, with every tile included, for up to 12 hours. The MapTiler SDK counts a session in the same way, for up to 6 hours or 10,000 requests. Other libraries, such as MapLibre GL JS, are billed per tile at both.

  • Mapbox GL JS: 50,000 map loads a month free, then USD 5.00 per 1,000 up to 100,000, USD 4.00 up to 200,000, USD 3.00 up to 1 million and USD 2.50 up to 5 million.
  • MapTiler Flex: 25,000 sessions included, then USD 2.50 per 1,000. The free plan has 5,000 sessions.

To compare the two, you need the tiles of a visit. We measured the first view of a map of 1280 × 720 pixels: 6 vector tiles for a city at zoom 13, 16 to 20 tiles with hillshading, contour lines or sea depths, and 40 to 75 tiles in 3D. Each pan and zoom adds tiles. With 25 tiles a visit:

Visits a month (tiles)4,000 (100,000)80,000 (2 million)400,000 (10 million)
Mapbox GL JSfreeUSD 150USD 1,250
MapTiler SDK, FlexUSD 30 (free for non-commercial use)USD 167.50USD 967.50
overpass.chfreeCHF 9 or €9CHF 29 or €29

Prices of 25 October 2026, a month of use, without taxes. If your visitors look at more of the map, billing per load gets cheaper in comparison; with fewer tiles a visit, billing per tile does.

Free services

ServiceWhat it says about use
OpenFreeMapFree, with no limit on map views or requests, without registration or keys, and commercial use is allowed. Paid for by donations. No service level agreement and no personal support at the moment.
VersaTiles (tiles.versatiles.org)Free and open to everyone, without guarantees. Requests are rate-limited per IP address. For a map server you rely on, the project recommends hosting it yourself.

Both serve OpenStreetMap vector tiles for MapLibre, and both publish their tiles for self-hosting. If your project can live with a free service that promises nothing, start there. Hosting the tiles yourself, for example as a single Protomaps file on object storage, costs storage and traffic and some of your time.

Beyond the price

  • Imagery: Mapbox, MapTiler and Stadia Maps also have satellite imagery. overpass.ch has no satellite imagery and no raster map images.
  • Styles: a style made for one schema does not fit the tiles of another. Moving from Mapbox Streets or OpenMapTiles tiles to the Protomaps schema of overpass.ch means restyling, or using our styles.
  • Limits: the paid plans of Stadia Maps and MapTiler charge extra use at the rates above. Their free plans and every plan of overpass.ch stop at the limit instead. Decide which of the two you prefer for a map that suddenly gets popular.
  • Library: Mapbox GL JS since version 2 is not open source and needs a Mapbox token. With MapLibre GL JS you can change the tile provider by changing the style URL. The guide From Mapbox GL JS to MapLibre GL JS has the code changes.
