Overpass query example

Embassies and consulates

Find diplomatic missions with the office=diplomatic tag. Example: embassies in Bern.

Embassies and consulates are tagged office=diplomatic, with diplomatic=embassy or consulate and the represented country in country.

The query

[out:json][timeout:60];
area["name"="Bern"]["admin_level"="8"]->.a;
nwr["office"="diplomatic"](area.a);
out center;

Run it

Running the query…

Live result from overpass.ch, cached for up to 12 hours. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

How it works

  1. office=diplomatic replaced the older amenity=embassy tag.
  2. The country tag holds the ISO code of the country the mission represents.

Variations

  • The missions of one country worldwide: nwr["office"="diplomatic"]["country"="CH"]; (no area needed, but use a longer timeout).

Run it from your code

curl https://api.overpass.ch/v1/YOUR_API_KEY/interpreter \
  --data-urlencode 'data@query.overpassql'

Save the query as query.overpassql. It works the same in Overpass Turbo, QGIS and JOSM.
