Overpass query example

High-voltage power lines

Draw the power transmission grid of a region. Example: the Swiss Plateau.

Overhead power lines are ways tagged power=line (minor lines power=minor_line); voltage holds the voltage in volts.

The query

[out:json][timeout:60];
way["power"="line"](46.8,7.0,47.3,8.0);
out geom;

Run it

Live result from overpass.ch, cached for up to 12 hours. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

How it works

  1. One way usually runs over many towers; name, ref and operator describe the line.
  2. voltage can hold several values separated by semicolons.

Variations

  • Only 380 kV lines: ["voltage"~"380000"].
  • Substations: nwr["power"="substation"].

Run it from your code

curl https://api.overpass.ch/v1/YOUR_API_KEY/interpreter \
  --data-urlencode 'data@query.overpassql'

Save the query as query.overpassql. It works the same in Overpass Turbo, QGIS and JOSM.
