Overpass query example

Breweries in a country

Search a whole country by ISO code. Example: every brewery in Belgium.

A country is just another area. Its boundary carries the ISO 3166-1 code, which is a reliable way to select it regardless of language.

The query

[out:json][timeout:60];
area["ISO3166-1"="BE"][admin_level=2]->.be;
nwr["craft"="brewery"](area.be);
out center;

Run it

Running the query…

Live result from overpass.ch, cached for up to 12 hours. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

How it works

  1. area["ISO3166-1"="BE"][admin_level=2] is Belgium. The admin_level avoids other areas that carry the same code.
  2. craft=brewery marks places where beer is brewed. Brewpubs are often tagged microbrewery=yes on the pub instead.

Variations

  • Include brewpubs: add nwr["microbrewery"="yes"](area.be); in a union.
  • Country-wide queries take longer. Give them a [timeout:] of 60 or more.

Run it from your code

curl https://api.overpass.ch/v1/YOUR_API_KEY/interpreter \
  --data-urlencode 'data@query.overpassql'

Save the query as query.overpassql. It works the same in Overpass Turbo, QGIS and JOSM.
