Drinking water fountains in a city

Find every public drinking water fountain in a city. Example: the 2,000+ nasoni of Rome.

Rome is famous for its nasoni, the always-running cast-iron fountains. This query lists all drinking water points within the city of Rome.

The query

[out:json][timeout:60];
area["name"="Roma"]["admin_level"="8"]["wikidata"="Q220"]->.a;
node["amenity"="drinking_water"](area.a);
out;

Run it

Live result from overpass.ch, cached for up to 12 hours. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

How it works

  1. ["admin_level"="8"] is the municipality of Rome (Italian comuni are level 8). Two other places called Roma have the same level, so ["wikidata"="Q220"] picks Rome.
  2. Drinking water fountains are almost always single points, so node is enough.
  3. out; prints coordinates and tags such as bottle=yes or fountain=nasone.

Variations

  • Add ["wheelchair"="yes"] or ["bottle"="yes"] to filter further.
  • To include fountains and taps tagged differently, use a union.

Run it from your code

curl https://api.overpass.ch/v1/YOUR_API_KEY/interpreter \
  --data-urlencode 'data@query.overpassql'

Save the query as query.overpassql. It works the same in Overpass Turbo, QGIS and JOSM.
