Overpass query example

Trees by genus or species

Query the street trees of a city by genus. Example: the lime trees (Tilia) of Vienna.

Many cities have imported their tree registers. Individual trees are points tagged natural=tree, often with genus, species and leaf_type.

The query

[out:json][timeout:60];
area["name"="Wien"]["admin_level"="4"]->.a;
node["natural"="tree"]["genus"="Tilia"](area.a);
out;

Run it

Running the query…

Live result from overpass.ch, cached for up to 12 hours. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

How it works

  1. genus holds the Latin genus, species the full Latin name, for example Tilia cordata.
  2. Vienna maps over 170,000 trees. Filter before you output, or the answer gets large.

Variations

  • How many trees in total? See count features.
  • Conifers only: ["leaf_type"="needleleaved"].

Run it from your code

curl https://api.overpass.ch/v1/YOUR_API_KEY/interpreter \
  --data-urlencode 'data@query.overpassql'

Save the query as query.overpassql. It works the same in Overpass Turbo, QGIS and JOSM.
