Overpass query example

Viewpoints

Find scenic viewpoints in a region. Example: around Lake Lucerne.

Viewpoints are points tagged tourism=viewpoint. Some have a direction tag for the view.

The query

[out:json][timeout:25];
node["tourism"="viewpoint"](46.90,8.20,47.10,8.65);
out;

Run it

Running the query…

Live result from overpass.ch, cached for up to 12 hours. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).

How it works

  1. A bounding box is the easiest way to search a region that is not an administrative unit.

Variations

  • Observation towers: nwr["man_made"="tower"]["tower:type"="observation"].

Run it from your code

curl https://api.overpass.ch/v1/YOUR_API_KEY/interpreter \
  --data-urlencode 'data@query.overpassql'

Save the query as query.overpassql. It works the same in Overpass Turbo, QGIS and JOSM.
