What the map shows

  • The land coloured by height in 20 steps, from green at sea level through yellow and brown to grey above about 4,000 m and almost white above 5,500 m.
  • Hillshading at every zoom, and contour lines from zoom 10.
  • Water, glaciers, roads, railways, borders and places, kept light so that the colours of the land show.
  • Peaks with their names and heights, from zoom 10.

The heights come from the Copernicus GLO-90 terrain, a grid with 90 m spacing; MapLibre colours each pixel of the terrain tiles in the browser. Roads, places and water come from OpenStreetMap and are updated every week.

const map = new maplibregl.Map({
  container: "map",
  style: "https://api.overpass.ch/v1/YOUR_KEY/maps/styles/relief.json",

});
map.addControl(new maplibregl.NavigationControl({ visualizePitch: true }));
</script>
  • The style needs MapLibre GL JS 5.6 or later, for the color-relief layer that colours the land.
  • ?terrain=1 adds 3D terrain; tilt the map with pitch and allow up to 85 degrees with maxPitch: 85.
  • ?lang=es sets the label language; 41 languages are available.

To colour by height in a style of your own, add a color-relief layer on our terrain tiles, as the nautical map guide does for the sea. More in hillshading, 3D terrain and contour lines.

What to expect

  • The 90 m grid shows hills, valleys and mountains. It is too coarse for small slopes in towns, and sharp summits read low.
  • The sea is one colour; the marine style shows its depths.
  • Every tile counts once: vector tiles, terrain tiles and contour lines. Terrain tiles go up to zoom 10 and are enlarged closer in, so the colours add few tiles.
